Mac DFU Entry: Model-Specific Ports and Laptop/Desktop Procedures

Enter DFU on supported Apple silicon and T2 Macs: find the model-specific port, use laptop timing or the desktop sequence, and check Finder detection.

This companion focuses on entering Mac DFU mode and diagnosing host-side detection; it is not a general firmware-repair or startup troubleshooting guide. Before connecting the Macs, confirm eligibility, host requirements, cable, and the target model’s port in Apple’s revive or restore guide and current DFU-port table. Do not infer the correct port from its appearance: Apple says it can look identical to the other USB-C ports.

Use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports both data and charging; Apple says not to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Connect the two Macs directly, without a hub. The host can be any Mac running macOS 14 or later and must have an internet connection and enough free storage for the recovery download; Apple says 32 GB should be more than enough.

Identify the target port before choosing a sequence

Use the exact model and enclosure, not just “MacBook” or “Mac desktop.” Apple’s port table contains model-year exceptions: for example, some recent MacBook Air and 14-inch MacBook Pro models use a different side port than earlier models, and the 2025-or-later Mac mini uses a middle rear port. The table also distinguishes tower and rack Mac Pro enclosures. Check the live table immediately before the procedure; “leftmost” or “rightmost” is meaningful only from Apple’s stated viewing direction for that model.

Enter DFU on a Mac laptop

Apple’s laptop procedure uses a built-in-keyboard chord. It is not the desktop power-reconnect procedure below.

  1. Keep the host Mac turned on, powered, and online; connect the target Mac to power. Connect the cable to the target’s exact DFU port and any USB-C port on the host. Leave the target’s other USB ports empty except as needed to connect it to power; if the target laptop has MagSafe, use that for power instead of another USB port. Then hold the target’s power or Touch ID button for up to 10 seconds until it turns off. If it turns on instead, repeat this shutdown step.
  2. Press and release the target’s power button. Immediately press and hold all four keys together on its built-in keyboard: left Control, left Option, right Shift, and power.
  3. Follow the timing for the target’s chip family:
    • Apple silicon laptop: hold all four keys for about 10 seconds. Then release Control, Option, and Shift while continuing to hold power for up to 10 more seconds, until the host Mac shows the DFU window in Finder.
    • T2 laptop: hold the same four keys for about 3 seconds, until Finder shows the DFU window.
  4. If an accessory-connection alert appears before Finder’s DFU window, release the keys as Apple’s instructions specify and choose Allow. In DFU mode, the target display should be blank; confirm detection on the host rather than treating a dark display alone as success.

The key chord and timing above apply to laptops only. Use the separate desktop procedure below for an iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro, and confirm the exact model’s DFU port in Apple’s table.

Enter DFU on a desktop Mac

Apple gives desktops a power-transition sequence rather than the laptop keyboard chord:

  1. Confirm the exact DFU port in Apple’s table and leave the target’s other USB ports empty. Connect the cable directly from that port to any USB-C port on the host; keep the host on, powered, and online. Disconnect the target Mac from power.
  2. Press and hold the target’s power button.
  3. While continuing to hold power, reconnect the target to power. Keep holding for up to 10 seconds, until the host shows the DFU window in Finder.
  4. If Finder first presents an accessory-connection alert, release the power button and choose Allow. Once Finder shows the DFU window, release the button. The target display should remain blank.

This sequence applies to desktop targets covered by Apple’s procedure. Do not improvise a laptop key combination or change ports at random if detection fails.

Diagnose a missing Finder DFU window

Use observable checks to separate a Finder display setting from an entry or connection problem:

  1. In Finder settings, open Sidebar and enable CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices; then check Locations for Mac. Apple documents this setting as a first check when the DFU window is not visible.
  2. Reconfirm the target model’s DFU port and repeat the correct laptop or desktop sequence from a fully powered-off target. Laptop timing differs between Apple silicon and T2; desktop entry requires the power-disconnect/reconnect sequence.
  3. If Finder still does not detect the target, return to Apple’s main guide for its connection checks and stop rather than selecting an action on another device. A blank target display without a Finder DFU window does not establish that the target entered DFU mode.

Keep a short support record of the exact model/chip family, selected port, laptop or desktop sequence, timing, any accessory alert, and whether Finder displayed Mac DFU Mode. These observations make a repeat attempt diagnosable without guessing which step changed.

When Finder displays the DFU window, hand off to Apple’s revive or restore guide for the recovery decision and its consequences. This article intentionally ends at reliable DFU entry and detection.
