Correcting the Record on Who Actually 'Invented' Email
Ray Tomlinson deserves credit for one specific breakthrough: networked email. Same-machine electronic mail existed years before he touched it.
Ray Tomlinson is widely, and largely accurately, credited as the inventor of email — but the popular version of this story usually compresses a more specific, more interesting technical achievement into an oversimplified “he invented email from nothing” framing that skips over what already existed.
What existed before Tomlinson’s 1971 work
Programs allowing users to leave messages for other users on the same shared computer — most notably SNDMSG — already existed by the 1960s, on time-sharing systems where multiple users’ accounts lived on one physical machine. This was, genuinely, a form of electronic messaging, just constrained to a single machine’s own users.
What Tomlinson actually did in 1971
Tomlinson’s specific, real contribution was adapting SNDMSG to work across different machines connected via ARPANET, incorporating code from a separate file-transfer program called CPYNET to make this possible — and introducing the @ symbol to separate a username from the specific machine (host) that user’s account lived on, a convention every email address still uses today.
How old “same-machine mail” actually was
The single-computer lineage is concrete and dateable. In 1965, MIT’s Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) gained a MAIL command, written by Tom Van Vleck and Noel Morris, that let one CTSS user leave a message in another user’s directory — electronic mail between people, six years before Tomlinson’s work, just bounded by the walls of one machine. Similar facilities appeared across other time-sharing systems in the following years; SNDMSG, the program Tomlinson extended, was the TENEX operating system’s version of the same idea. Tomlinson did his 1971 work at BBN, the contractor building ARPANET nodes, which is precisely why he was positioned to ask the question nobody had implemented yet: why should the recipient have to be on this computer?
What happened immediately after 1971
Adoption was fast enough to be its own historical evidence. Larry Roberts, then running the ARPA office funding the network, wrote RD in 1972 — one of the first programs for listing, reading, and managing mail rather than just sending it — because volume already demanded tooling. Within a couple of years, contemporaneous ARPANET studies were describing electronic mail as the dominant use of the network, an outcome none of its designers had planned for. The transport was eventually formalized in Jon Postel’s SMTP specification (RFC 821) in 1982, alongside RFC 822’s message format — descendants of conventions Tomlinson’s messages had started, including the @ sign.
The modern dispute the qualifier prevents
Being precise about “networked email” also defuses the best-known modern controversy on this subject. In 2012, press coverage around a Smithsonian acquisition described V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai — who as a teenager in 1978 wrote a mail program called EMAIL for a New Jersey medical school, and registered a copyright for it in 1982 — as email’s inventor. Historians of computing responded by pointing to the documentary record above: CTSS MAIL in 1965, Tomlinson’s networked mail in 1971, RD in 1972, all predating that program. A copyright registration records authorship of a specific piece of code, not priority over a concept. The episode is a textbook case of why this post’s distinction matters: with the “networked” qualifier stated plainly, there is no ambiguity left for a claim like that to occupy.
Why “network email,” specifically, is the right way to credit this
The accurate, precise claim is that Tomlinson invented networked email — sending a message from a user on one computer to a user on a different computer, over a network — not electronic messaging in some more general, unqualified sense that ignores the pre-existing single-machine SNDMSG system his own work was built directly on top of.
Tomlinson’s own acknowledgment of this distinction
Tomlinson himself, in later interviews and writing, distinguished between the pre-existing “interuser” messaging tools like SNDMSG and the “network” email his 1971 work specifically introduced — the more careful, technically precise framing came from Tomlinson’s own account of his work, not from later popularizers who dropped the qualifier.
Why this precision is worth preserving
“Invented email” without qualification erases a real, specific, and genuinely clever technical contribution (bridging an existing single-machine tool across a network, plus the enduring @ symbol convention) by making it sound like messaging between people via computer didn’t exist in any form before 1971 — when the more accurate, and honestly more interesting, story is that Tomlinson took something that already worked in a limited context and made the specific leap that let it work across an entire network instead.
