How to Get the Most Out of a Visit to a Computer History Museum
Plan around live demos like CHM's IBM 1401 and Bletchley's Colossus rebuild, mine oral history archives, and use collection databases remotely.
Several institutions maintain genuinely significant computing history collections, in person and, increasingly, through substantial digital archives accessible from anywhere — this walks through getting real research and educational value out of either kind of visit.

Each institution has a somewhat different collecting focus — worth checking a specific institution’s collection strengths against whatever specific topic you’re researching before planning a visit around it.
Beyond the American institutions, two European collections belong on any serious list. The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park in the UK is built around working machines — including the rebuilt Colossus, the codebreaking computer reconstructed by Tony Sale’s team, and the Harwell Dekatron (WITCH), often described as the world’s oldest original working digital computer following its 2012 restoration. Germany’s Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn bills itself as the world’s largest computer museum by exhibition space, with a collection running from mechanical calculation to the present. A sobering counterexample rounds out the list: Seattle’s Living Computers Museum, famous for letting visitors use running vintage mainframes, closed in 2020 and its collection was later auctioned — a reminder that these institutions are not permanent fixtures, and that “I’ll see it eventually” is a preservation risk in its own right. Always verify current opening status before planning travel around any of them.

What separates a computing museum from a museum that happens to contain computers is machinery that still runs, and the running happens on a schedule. The Computer History Museum’s restored IBM 1401 system and its PDP-1 — the latter demonstrating Spacewar!, the 1962 game written for exactly that hardware — are operated at scheduled demonstration times, often by volunteer docents who worked on these machine families during their careers; Bletchley’s Colossus rebuild likewise runs as a demonstration piece. Arriving without checking the schedule is how visitors end up seeing the world’s best-preserved machines standing silent. The docents themselves are part of the primary-source value: a question about punched-card workflow answered by someone who spent the 1960s operating 1401s is oral history delivered live.

Museums are generally reliable, careful sources, but exhibit text is sometimes simplified for a general audience in ways that lose precision — cross-referencing a specific claim against the institution’s own more detailed collection database entry, or another primary source entirely, is worth doing for anything you intend to cite precisely.
Step 8: use a virtual visit when in-person access isn’t practical

A virtual visit won’t replace seeing an artifact like Grace Hopper’s actual logbook in person, but a surprising amount of genuine research value — searchable databases, oral histories, digitized documents — is available remotely at no cost. For researchers outside the United States and Europe, the remote route is not a consolation prize: most of the citable material in these institutions’ collections was digitized precisely so it could be used without a plane ticket.
Why physical artifacts and primary documents add something a summary can’t
Reading a description of “the moth found in Relay #70” is different from seeing the actual logbook page, moth still taped in place, in person or in a high-resolution museum scan — physical and documentary artifacts carry a kind of evidentiary weight and immediacy that even a careful secondhand description can’t fully substitute for.
